Whitney Place Residents – Hurricane Preparedness checklist
The public is encouraged to act in their best interest and voluntarily evacuate the risk area when advised to do so by Jefferson Parish officials.
If you plan to evacuate, leave as early as possible before tropical storm force winds and storm surge cause road closures. Leaving early will also help you avoid possible traffic jams and road restrictions that will be in place after contraflow is implemented.
PREPARE TO EVACUATE IF ADVISED TO DO SO BY OFFICIALS THROUGH RADIO OR TELEVISION.
DISASTER SUPPLY KIT:
· A three-day supply of both non-perishable food and drinking water (one gallon per person per day)
· Your family’s medications, in their Original Bottle with label from Pharmacy.
· Change of clothing and footwear (sturdy shoes),
· one blanket/sleeping bag for each person,
· sanitation supplies,
· extra batteries or
· a solar charged flashlight,
· a battery or solar-powered radio,
· an extra set of car and house keys,
· cash, debit, and credit cards.
· Any special items needed for the care of infant, elderly, or disabled family members.
· important papers, such as property inventory and insurance records, personal ID, passport, etc.
Be sure to prepare the following:
· Keep car tanks filled with gas.
· Cell phone and charger
· List of immediate family members and friends contact information to take.
Your evacuation plan should include where you are going and what route you are taking to get there. Take paper maps with you; cell phone towers do not always work.
Alert your out-of-state contact of your departure time and expected arrival time.
• Public Information Offices will work to gather as much information as possible on the status of various locations within the parish and disseminate via WWL-Radio, 870 AM or 103.3 FM. WWL-Radio personnel will operate and broadcast out of the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operating Center. If systems permit, the information will also be displayed on the Jefferson Parish website, www.jeffparish.net and disseminated to local and surrounding media outlets.
For those without transportation:
A local bus will pick you up on a regular Jefferson Parish transit route and bring you to a staging area where a state bus will take you to a public shelter.
· If you are presently serviced by a home healthcare agency, you are to go through your healthcare agency and not Jefferson Parish.
When Jefferson Parish calls for an evacuation, a telephone number will be released via radio and television. At that time those needing assistance who are not serviced by a home healthcare agency are to call the publicized number to determine their eligibility.
BEFORE you leave:
· Bag your refrigerator food in heavy black plastic bags and put back in the refrigerator. If the power goes out, it makes it easier to empty bad food.
· Also put all frozen foods in double garbage bags and put back in freezer so that if the power goes out for a long time, your freezer will be easier to clean.
· Unplug electronics, such as TV, computers, printers, land line phones, etc. Using the water shut off valves and shut off your water to the sinks. Turn off your a/c system.
· Take in all loose items and furniture that are outside of your home and store inside your condo.
· Lock windows.
IF you plan to stay: This is NOT advised.
